Compare the Subaru Forester to the Hyundai Tucson
Against the Hyundai Competition in Nederland, TX, Subaru Forester Comes Out on Top
Ours is a wagon-based compact SUV, a favorite among orienteers in our Nederland neck of the East Texas woods since 1997. Theirs is a crossover a little newer to the trail, making basecamp in 2005 and going strong with the Lone Star State ever since. But only one has what it takes to tackle the terrain, push through the weather, and keep you and yours comfortable, safe, and connected around Jefferson County and beyond. That's the new Subaru Forester. Check out how it fares against its rival, the new Hyundai Tucson, right here!
The Battle of the Small SUVs Goes Big: Subaru Forester vs. Hyundai Tucson
Power and Performance
- The new Forester pulls out in base and Premium, as well as a well-appointed Sport, Limited and Touring trim. The new Tucson offers its own gamut of SE, SEL, Value, Limited, Ultimate, and athletic Sport trims.
- Base Forester models build in a 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine that puts out 176 pound-feet of torque. Tucson incorporates a less-energetic 161-horsepower, 2.0-liter at the base model, and you'll need to rise to the top of the line to get a slim gain of 181 horsepower. Even with an upgrade, the Hyundai Tucson doesn't offer an engine that can compare to Subaru's BOXER setup.
- Subaru designs its engines "flat" as opposed to "in-line," the build used by other automakers. Their pistons move from side to side, excellently balancing the ride, delivering engine power more efficiently, and enhancing your drive-time confidence. Hyundai and its inline-four can't make the same claim.
- Between Forester and Tucson, it's ours that's more fuel-efficient. You get an EPA-estimated 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway with a CVT. The best Tucson can get is 23 mpg and 28 mpg, respectively.

Safety and Driver-Assist Features
- Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, our automaker's proprietary, permanent, and always-on AWD system and a mainstay of nearly every Subaru car and SUV, comes standard across the Forester line. It allocates power to every wheel, at the same time, using an available X-MODE® to make the most of traction well before your wheels slip. That compensates for FWD understeering and RWD oversteering alike. Plus, the system is simpler than those of other manufacturers, with fewer moving parts, meaning lower and less maintenance over time. Hyundai's AWD is optional, electronic versus structural, and is characterized as "slip-then-grip," meaning it's less proactive.
- Forester offers a huge array of standard safety and driver-assist features throughout the entire lineup. They include an EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology suite, incorporating lane departure and lane keep assist systems, sway warning, adaptive cruise control, and pre-collision brakes, as well as a blind-spot detector, rear cross-traffic alert, and STARLINK Safety and Security connected services. The last can notify first responders after a crash, call for roadside assistance, help with recovery if your Forester is stolen, and more. The Tucson offers a range of exciting features, but you won't find an all-encompassing lineup to rival that of Forester's safety features.
Exterior and Interior
- The Forester comes equipped with plenty of helpful features to guide you through your daily drive. LED Steering Responsive Headlights come equipped on every model now, and available raised roof rails let you equip cargo carriers and more to ensure you bring everything you need on your next adventure. The Hyundai Tucson offers neither of these standard.
- Forester is also the roomier of the two options, both regarding passenger space and cargo room. Count on 111.9 cubic feet for you and your fellow riders, with up to 76.1 cubic feet for luggage, camping gear, sports equipment, and other essentials. Tucson offers only 102.2 cubic feet for passengers and up to 61.9 cubic feet for cargo.
